Bitter Tears
Doreen left the stage after one song and the three musicians continued their performance. They sang about Derry, the town in Northern Ireland that has been tormented by the confrontations between Catholics, Protestants and the British Army. The man with the banjo sang the famous song "The Town I Loved So Well" with a sad but strong voice. The song balanced on a thin line between powerful emotions and maudlin sentimentality. The Irish bards always seem to avoid the abyss of sloppy sentiment and Irish Romance stands on steady feet. Mother Ireland sheds bitter tears for her worried sister of the North.
