 Margaret and Mitchell Henry
The story of Kylermore Abbey is fascinating. It was originally built as the mansion of Mitchell and Margaret Henry. They came to this place on their honeymoon in 1850. Margaret fell in love with the beautiful nature and the couple decided to build their home here. The Henrys were ship owners so money was no problem. The construction started in 1864 and the family could settle down in 1868. It is told that Mitchell Henry invested £250,000 in this estate, an incredibly huge amount at that time. The staff called him "close to almighty God." Mr. Henry was one of those wealthy people who are actually regarded as saints when they occasionally restrain themselves from abusing other people's rights.
