3 (40) The Price of Development The road signs on N4 showed An tIarthar - simply "The West". All around us we watched the transformation of an old-fashioned farming society into a country entering the high-tech world. More than 60 percent of all the autos we saw were less than five years old. The houses were newly painted and new buildings could be seen everywhere. The traffic around Dublin was heavy. I was impressed, but yet I could not keep from thinking about what things will stay specific Irish in a world where soon all people dress the same and are stuffed by the same news and entertainment.
