Newgrange Map
Newgrange is a mound from the Neolithic era. ItPhoto: Newgrange, County Meath. Click the image for enlargement was built 5500 years ago, predating the pyramids more than 1000 years. The facing is made of white quartzite and dark granite. The 20-meter long passage inside the grave is narrow and low. Once a year, at winter solstice, a sunbeam finds its way through the passage. The air is dry and fresh inside. People have come to worship here for thousands of years. In ancient days, the place was connected with the mysterious Tuatha Dé Danann.
We were waiting for the guided tour. The soft rain of IrelandPhoto: Newgrange, County Meath. Click the image for enlargement poured down on us, but the umbrella gave good shelter. "Thanks for the umbrella," a young woman suddenly said as she silently came up behind us. Her friend was still out there in the rain. We waved to her and slowly she came closer. "I love this soft rain," she said. We told her about the mists of Kerry. "I want to drive in that mist," she replied. They came from Switzerland. An encounter, they were on their way out and we were heading home. Our flight left five hours later.
