Danish Vikings founded a fortified town they called Dubh Linn, "the black pool". Dublin celebrated its millennium in 1988. The city's Celtic origin still rings in the Irish name: Baile Átha Cliath, "the town of the hurdle ford".
 Dublin is a European metropolis, but whereas most other capitals have expanded into inhuman proportions, Dublin is still friendly and easy accessible.
