the river Liffey have held settlements for thousands of years. Danish
Vikings founded a fortified town they called Dubh Linn, "the black
pool". Dublin celebrated its millennium in 1988. The city's Celtic
origin still rings in the Irish name: Baile Átha Cliath, "the
town of the hurdle ford".
O'Connell Bridge, connecting the north districts with the throbbing city
centre, to the dignified Trinity College, the busy shops on Grafton Street
