 It's no more than a quarter of an hour's drive from the troubles in Belfast to the quiet countryside of the Ards Peninsula.Photo: Portavogie, Ards Peninsula. Click the image for enlargement You pass through the small towns and villages of Holywood, Bangor, Donaghadee, Ballywalter, Portavogie, Portaferry and Newtonards. People from Belfast gather up on large caravan camps along the coastline, next to their neighbours from the same residence area. In a compartment a little more than 20 square meters big, they get some relief from all the hardship of the city.

But the peace and tranquillity is no more than fool's gold. Suddenly the silence is broken. We stopped at the town centre in Newtonards, one sleepy Sunday afternoon, to make a phone call. Some hours later a massive 700-kg bomb, placed in a van by IRA destroyed the whole town centre.
