  In The Name of Religion
   Egyptian culture was largely influenced by Greek customs during this period. The Greeks were clever Detail Of Stone Carving, Philaeenough not to change the religious structure. Instead they adopted the Egyptian gods. In this manner, the goddess Hathor merged with the Greek love goddess Aphrodite. This was a way to rule the country.
 When the first Christians came to Egypt they started to use the old temples for their services. The Christians in Egypt are called Coptic and it is one of the oldest churches in the world. The followers of the new religion were eager to wipe out everything they considered pagan. The Christians carved their own symbols on the temple walls and they cut the statues into stone crosses.
