  An Archaeological Sacrilege
After the examination of the mummy, Howard Carter and his associates put the boy king back in the golden coffin. In his writings, Carter reassured that all necessary efforts were done to keep the mummy preserved in its original condition.
In December 1968, Dr R G Harrison Tutankhamen and his wife Ankhesenamen, Luxor Templeopened the coffin for a new, thorough examination by modern methods and instruments. Harrison found Tutankhamen literally torn apart. The mummy had not been re-wrapped, the neck was broken and the body in decay. Carter had neglected his archaeological duty to protect the mummy and instead acted more or less like the grave robbers he had scorned in his book.
