The
raising of a bridge at Esna 
gave
an opportunity for trade. When our ship tried to press through the narrow
passage, a crowd of men and young boys had assembled to offer their goods.
They sold different kinds of clothes and tablecloths, either bought cheep
from local factories or made by their relatives.They
cried out "America,
America!" and "Lady, buy, buy!" to us on this floating
vessel of fortune. It is a healthy experience to a compassionate Swede.
Thus is the way we are looked upon: as a part of the wealthy west, "America,
America!": with curiosity, suspicion, longing and hate.
