Richard the Lion Heart from the Arabs. Some of Richard's ships were stranded outside Limassol, one of them conveying his betrothed Berengaria of Navarra. Isaac Comnenos, who had an alliance with the Arabs, tried to take Berengaria and her party as his hostages. This failed and Richard landed with his army, made himself the master of the island and routed Isaac Comnenos' troops. On Cyprus there's an old custom of showing great hospitality to travellers. Isaac Comnenos had to learn what it could mean to defect from this custom. |
