Sunken in Sand East
Coast, with the Mesaoria planes adjacent to the west, lies the city of Famagusta
with its history of trade and migration, war and conquest. In AD 648, the
inhabitants of Salamis, after its destruction by the Saracens,
moved to a place they called Ammochostos,
"sunken in sand." As time went by, the name changed into Famagusta. its
golden age in the 14th century the city was one of the most important trade
centres of the East Mediterranean and headquarters for several religious
orders. The city's Turkish name is Gazimağusa, "the victorious Magusa," which
is a proper name for a city that over the centuries has survived the heavy
marching of conquering armies. |
