A Soldier's Return National
Guard, moved up on a hill close to the Swedish field hospital Oasis. Turkish
armoured vehicles approached this entrance to Famagusta. After five hours
of fire exchange the Greek Cypriot soldiers gave in and asked the Swedish
UN troops for shelter. The photo above is taken just as the Greek Cypriots
have been gathered outside Oasis. A machine gun
is fired 160 yards away, which alert the soldiers. To the right stands my
brother Lars-Erik Arvendal. He came back to this spot 22 years after this
day when the Turkish army conquered Famagusta. The road, the houses and
the camp were still there. |
