The White Tower

After the surrender of the city to the Ottoman army the Venetian commander Bragadino quarrelled with Mustafa Pasha about the treatment of the surviving Turkish prisoners. Bragadino was tortured and flayed and his skin was sent around the Mediterranean Sea as a warning lesson. The Ottomans renamed Bastion Ravelin to Akkule in memory of the Venetian capitulation. The word ak is Turkish for white and kule means tower. A fixed bridge replaced the drawbridge, since there was no longer any threat of an assault from the inland.
