Land Gate crossed the moat. The city gate was first called Ravelin and with its bastion it was one of Famagusta's most important defences. From the projecting bastion the defenders of the city could fire in different directions and stop assaulting troops trying to cross the moat and charge the walls. The bastion Ravelin played an important role when the Ottoman host under the command of Mustafa Pasha besieged Famagusta in 1571. |
