Forgotten by the World across Cyprus, dividing the Cypriot people, on one side of the border Greek Cypriots, on the other Turk Cypriots. For me, who once experienced Cyprus as one nation, this is a deep grief. I had my youth's greatest travel experience in the city of Famagusta, in what is now the Turk Cypriot part. I have returned many times to southern Cyprus. But this time, after almost a quarter of a century, I set out on a journey to the North. I revisited Famagusta, the city that captured my heart most of all, when I travelled to a country at the outskirts of Europe, almost forgotten by the world and blocked for entry: a destination denied. |
