Old City

When you have landed at the Ercan airport, close to the city of Nicosia, you drive to Famagusta across the parched Mesaoria planes. The old Famagusta, Old City, is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, preserved into our time. The Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque raises high above the city. The building, which originally was named St Nicholas' Cathedral, was constructed at the beginning of the 14th century and it is one of the most beautiful gothic structures of the Mediterranean region. When the Ottoman Empire conquered Famagusta in 1571, the cathedral was rebuilt into a mosque.
